WHILE CREATING THE IMAGE I THOUGHT THIS WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL ON ITS OWN

I ADDED COLOR JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE!! BUT THEY BOTH CAME OUT GREAT!!

OMG MY WORST NIGHTMARE!!!

Vimeo Interactive Art Video

So interactive Art is pretty exciting. For you to be the viewer and also helping the artist to create the art is like creating a piece of history (even though it fades away)

Golan Levin

Watching the interview of the questions and answers of Golan was pretty interesting to watch. To watch some one in 3D was pretty cool. His side profile seem almost fake. Like he was computer generated. Even though some of the shots flickered it was pretty cool, to see this type of technology being used.

Comments

Michelle- I loved the voice overs in your video. The effects you had as well was really cool. Including videos for the past was great idea as well.
Megan- I got the message that the stereotypical  women has completely changed and due to that we no longer care that it is causing us to be obese.
Juan- Your video has a lot of angry, and was very disturbing, but in the end the final message was very motivational.
Lauren- The disney princess was a great idea. I got that message that even though we grew up believe that life is this big fairy tale only you can decided if its going to be a happy ending.
James- You music was awesome. It reminded me of old video games.
Maria- even though I don't understand Spanish, it was very powerful and by how moved you were it meant a lot to you. Great job
Erin- I loved the effects on your video. I was i could have seen more of you.
Nakota- your video was amazing, home videos of special moments in your life is always a positive message to remind yourself that life had good times.
Chris- you video was so good... the creativity was amazing, the song was so moving. And she didn't deserve you anyways. :)
Arielle- Using a moment to remember how dangerous and naive you where is always a good message to yourself to look back. I'm sure this video will make you smile.
Brian- I wish we could have seen the video but I only got the message to remember to be you which is very powerful in itself.
Sabrina- I would have loved to hear some music. The video was longer than assigned but the best part was being able to view you in the background.
Cody- I wish i could have seen you piece i'm sure it is fantastic.

Performance Art Piece

This was a very difficult piece for me to explain and do but it had to be done. Growing up there where a lot of things kept secretive  from me. Finding out that I have other siblings and that I'm the child of Crack addict was very unbearable to shallow. Growing up and learning to let things go and realizing what day it age my biological mother was going through in order for me to develop into a adult I have to learn to let things go. So the project was based off What would you do if it was the end of the world. My project was to forgive my Carol Thomas.

Rare 70's Electronical Music -Hunger Games

So the Movie Hunger Games is out now and it was a huge hit even before the movie came out the book was a major success. I haven't had time to go see it yet but of course the soundtrack it going to be a big deal for multi-mill dollar movie. So the sound 'Sediment' from the soundtrack is causing alot of buzz for Electronic music lovers because the composer ( Laurie Spiegel) used an old almost extinct method to create the sound. The track was composed in 1972, and she used an analog synthesizer and old-school tape machines.

Flash Mob

So since i'm  a huge MJ fan all of mines are on him :)
They Really Don't Care About Us!

                                                          Thriller

                                                  Beat It

Sheryl Oring

So in class we discussed Sheryl Oring, the artist who dresses up as a 50's secretary and does 'I wish to say letters' to the president for everyday people and she delivers them to the president.  This gives every day people to really express how they feel to the president about issues that are happening in their lives of themselves and other around them.  Doing just for the little people who feel like they don't have a say.

iwishtosay.org is her site.

Joseph Beuys

Joseph Beuys was born in 1921. Growing up he was interested in natural sciences and art. He was involved in the war and was wounded. In his later life He became apart of FLUXUS. He created performance objects, installations, sculptures and drawings that was very challenge the normal intellect. So hearing about his project "I like America and America Likes Me " was very interesting to hear that he locked himself into a room with a  wild coyote for 8 hours over 3 day.  Watching a video of the performance the coyote looked like a playful dog was expecting a vicious beast. Never the less you would never catch me in a room with one.

Xerox Project and Comments

So I had no idea what to do for this project. So I decide to incorporate something I loved. vintage 80's and music is my life so why not a boom box. I thought that it was a very different approach since I was kind of winging it, but overall I am proud of my work. I would say the reactions of my co-workers watching me trying to put my foot on the machine was a sight to see.

Megan-Great idea to use an umbrella collage. I thought the inverted toes nails on the foot was really cool as well.

Cody- The hat was a very cool idea. It was very well done. Facial expression was awesome.

Sabrina-Very good idea it was very cool. I loved the entire project, even the background. I would have liked to see you incorporate your face into the project tho.

Bryan- I loved the worm. Great idea for a regular picture to be creative with your body. The sun was really cool.

Nakota- Wow! wonderful idea. It was very beautiful project and the meaning was beautiful.

Arielle- Great job with the contrast of the pictures.

Michelle- Great job. Funny idea of the sign dog, the the flatting the face was a great idea. Very nice.

Lauren- Great meaning behind the project the words, the picture was amazing.

James-cool Project! I saw a duck!

Kimberly- cool project! it me a idea of a pool of souls and an arm is reaching for them.

Erin- Awesome project! it is very beautiful. It looks very painted.

Juan- Good Job implementing a story into the project.

Christopher- Great project very cool, and beach theme. The sun is my favorite.

Grid Art Project

Lauren- I love the idea of beer tops and the theme of the beach. my fav is the palm tree.

Kimberly- It is so beautiful! The idea of the eye, the color scheme. Everything is on point!

Sabrina- I love the idea of Ms. Pac man and the idea to use beans.

Michelle- I love th eidea to support Kony 2012. I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at but good job.

Megan- I love the idea of the stain glass and the flower. The project looks amazing.

Erin- I love the idea of Twiggy. It looks amazing. The colors, the drawing all fit together, but i did't really see the grid.

James- Inspiration of the project is cute. Good Job.

Juan- You mastered this project. The idea to use the buttons where a good idea. Great Job.

Christopher- You spent a lot of time on this project. It looks amazing. Creative job using straw bust. Great color theme.

Arielle- Really cool idea. You did a great job using the picture as the guide.  I love the idea to the cherrios as the rode.

Cody- You did an awesome job. Using the color scheme and the tiny squares as the grid.

Maria- I love the Simpsons! Great project. The glitter makes the picture standout.

Nakota- The penguin is really cute. Really cool idea.

Eyes on the picture box

So my grandmother said that she really can't remember when she owned a tv. But she did explain to me about the tv's that you use to have to crank up in order to watch. She was staying with her grandmother at the time and they had to use a handle to crank up the television in order for it to work. She did say that her and her family would sit around an watch it but it wasn't a nessecities  because they had so many other things to worry about such as chores, school , and taking care of the family.

Old Time Radio Show

So every time I think about old time radio I always picture the behind the scenes. I decided to listen to a comedy because I love to laugh and I chose 'The Chase and Sanborn Hour. So listening to the show it wasn't really funny I guess i'm more of a visual person. But reading up on the show there was a controversial episode with Mae West and a ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy Charlie McCarthy. So doing some research (youtube) I listened to the episode. I really enjoyed it and it was actually funny. Mae West being the sex symbol that she was just played her part like she always did. I don't see why the episode was so controversial but times and are different now and what happened during that episode is normal for my day and age. I have to give props Mae is a legend.

Flip Book Comments

So I was wondering why did the professor want us to destroy an old book and turn it into an but it changing the  meaning of the type of art the actual book was.

Christopher- Interesting concept. I love the flying man. The clouds where a bit creepy. Overall great book.

Kimberly- I love the flower and your owl. It reminded me of the owl from the tootsie roll commercials

Sabrina- I love the ocean them at the beginning of your book.

Lauren- I love you book from beginning to end. The can idea was really cool and the graffiti of your name is awesome.

Brian- The jack- in the boy or boom box (wasn't really sure what it was) was really cool.

Juan- The eye at the beginning is really good. I love the effects.

Michelle- I loved your book! Especially the stick figure jumping part. Great book!

Cody- I loved the entire theme of your book. The girl running for the balloon is funny.

Megan- The knife in the hear is pretty cool.

Nakota- I loved the island drawn scene of your book! Great color and detail.

Arielle- Great color and theme of the heart and music.

Erin- I loved the color and effect of your book the heart, sea, explosion or darkness of  the book.

James- Your drawing of the man is really cool and how he opens his mouth.

Maria- I love your book. The skateboarding is the best part.

The Great Train Robbery

The Great Train Robbery a silent film made in 1903. It is a Western film written and produced and directed by Edwin S. Porter. The plot was based by true events that occurred on August 29,1900, when 4 members of George Leroy Parker's (Butch Cassidy) "Hole in the Wall' gang halted the No. 3 train on the Union Pacific Railroad tracts toward Table Rock, Wyoming. The bandits forced the conductor to uncouple the passenger cars form the back of the train and then blew up the safe in the mail car to escape with about $5,000 in cash.

The film is noted for its innovative techniques which had never been done such as: parallel editing, jump-cuts or cross-cuts. Because of the new techniques of the silent film it is now being preserved in the United States National Film Registry.

BluBlu-Muto

So watching this was a bit disturbing but never the less it was an fanatic work of art. The piece was very unique  from beginning to end. The entire piece of was eye capturing and kept my attention during the entire video. Excluding the animation for the second. That it was very interesting that you could see the trailing behind from the previous picture almost like a shadow. the artist used alot of 3D work. The animation put the icing on the cake. I would have to say that the very beginning is my favorite part. The brick falling at the beginning kept my attention because I was very anxious to find out what was next. This project must have taken at least almost a year. It was a lot of creative thinking and a lot of work never the less it was very well done.

Jazz

Where did Jazz come from?

Jazz origins came from New Orleans. It has a unique mixture of West African , Blues, and Ragtime . It is one of the first genre that composites a huge melting pot of different genres.  It became popular in the 20th century.  It was a new style of music that brought traditions from West Africa and Europe. Jazz is also known for its unique  very proactive sexual dancing. Artist such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie are just a few who broke the racial barrier and became famous stars of Jazz. Because of Jazz different genres didn't have such a struggle trying to gain a broader variety of audience.

Classic Music in Media

                                 Gaetano Donizetti- Lucia di Lammermoor

Mozart- Magic Flute

Madama Butterfly Review

Madama Butterfly is a story about a geisha who falls in love with American navy  Lieutenant. In the animated cartoon it has a lot of metaphoric messages. The beginning of the movie it starts with a butterfly. I believe the butterfly stands for her spirit and symbolic of her love and dedication, it represents Cio-Cio San (Madama Butterfly). The next scene shows MB and her lover in the grass having passionate sex. He has a phonograph player that keeps playing a tune ( Una nave da guerra)The lieutenant then leaves and leaves MB with the phonograph and his hat and also a baby developing inside her womb. He tells her lies that he will be come back for her. Her being madly and stupidly in love waits for him. Her belly got bigger and she gives birth to a fish. The fish is a metaphoric symbol because in Japanese culture it is a symbolic affection of love and it is also a symbol for children. The baby grows up and is flying like a kite. Kite in Japanese culture where mainly used as a religions and thanks giving occasions.  This is the reason she is flying the baby as a kite. The next scene the baby is using her as a kite, stating that the baby started taking care of her because she is missing the lieutenant so much the only piece that she has left of him is their child. While flying MB sees the lieutenant ship and gets excited. She awaits him on top of the hill. Two days later he arrives in the car with a strange woman (who happens to be his wife) he comes and still the baby and waves goodbye to MB. Being so heartbroken she runs away and begins to dismember herself starting with her skin. She then dismember her limbs and her head and cuts off the light. MB dismember her limbs and head stand for the heart break and her turning off the light stand for her death. The butterfly appears again at the end of the video, representing her spirit.

Farinelli/ Castrato

Castrato- also caled Evirato, male sooprano or contralto voice of great range, flexibility , and power, produced as a result of castration before puberty.  (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/98795/castrato)

Brief History of Castrato- Very popular during the baroque period of 1600- 1700 . Castrato are males who can sing the same as a woman's soprano. Young boys around ages 6-8  that where picked by musical masters where under gone of a "unpractical" surgery where cutting the blood supply to the testicles, would stop the production of anderogen hormones. This would stop the deepness in the boys voical chord and had infantile  penises  would  be After the surgery was completed and  if the boy survived the surgery, he would go through an intensive training of studying and learning music for at least 10 years.. The reason why this was a very popular and considered normal during this  period is because women where forbidden to be on stage due to Catholic Church.(where castration originated from). These boys who grew up to be famous singers who lived very difficult and sad lives.

Farinelli- one of the most popular Castrato singers is Farinelli (Carlo Broschi).  One of the most famous Italian soprano castrato singers of the 18th century.  He frequently sang woman's roles due to his talented voice. He appeared in all the great cities of Italy, London,Europe and Spain and performed for royalty.

CUARTO NORTE

So in class Santi showed us one of his artistic friends Cuarto Norte. He used the example as showing us that multimedia is always changing, it doesn't have to happen at a fast rate, and can happen over a period of time.  Cuarto Norte exhibit with the frozen art. Now he creates this pieces of art and puts them in a big freezer and lets frost develop on the pieces. This is suppose to be helping develop the art and give viewers a sense that art is always changing. My favorite piece of art out of the exhibit is the frozen hands. Santi told us the store of how he was molding this project while he was going through a difficult time of his wife being sick from a stroke. I feel like the art piece means that we all have a flame (something to present to the world) but who will be brave enough to with stand the fire to present it.

About Me

My name is Cathrine Black but everyone calls me Cat. I am an EMAT Major (Electronic Media Arts  and Technology) I enjoy the looks on people faces when I tell them the name lol. I'm working on a concentration in Music and Film and Media Arts. My ideal goal right now is to make documentaries of musicians and musical artists. Santiago is my advisor and advised that I take this class. Santiago is every..... eccentric, ehh..   That doesn't begin to describe him in the slightest way. He is very  passionate about his work and has a very unique story to tell. I was always disgusted by the huge foot in the Cass building and know that it is his art, is really a surprise. I am ready to see what he has in store to help me open my creative box, that i'm sure is locked away very tight waiting to be release and expressed.
